Fear, anger and sadness became my daily companions.

In the ten days following his death, I was in shock, and I barely moved from a chair in our living room in front of our fireplace. I would gaze into the burning embers for hours, not disconnected or checked out. Instead, I experienced a presence that would rise in me as I gazed at the fire. Sadness, anger and fear were tempered by the soft hue of my eyes meeting the flames. I couldn’t explain it. It was comforting and calming.

It soothed me for the moment. Just enough to keep going.

Then rapid changes rifled through our lives like a rolodex in the aftermath. We left a Colorado ski town and landed in rural Central Virginia like a fish out of water. I closed down my spirituality business that I loved, unable to provide any semblance of wisdom or support in the wake of my grief. I clung to my living children with all my might, desperately hoping that if I held on, nothing bad would ever happen again. As I buried my son, I buried the remaining fragments of my life. 

I was constantly panicked, anxious, and afraid. My heart palpitated with fear.

After we moved across the country to be closer to family, my view changed from the Colorado mountain ranges to a bucolic farm in Virginia. The landscape changed; the gazing continued. I gazed into the fire in our wood stove, across the vast fields of crops, beyond the lake on the farm, and over the expanse of woods that had become my new habitat. The effect was the same.

I started to feel consistently calm, centered, clear.

Over time, I noticed that my gaze wasn’t only lowering my anxiety and fear. I began coupling gazing with expanded consciousness techniques. It was helping me access a new unordinary state that gave me purpose, direction, and insight. I started to feel more like myself again, and I was perceiving a larger purpose surrounding his death that was helping me make meaning from my loss. I wondered if gazing could be one method to help others as well. 

I gazed my way into a new state of Being –an unordinary state of expanded consciousness.

I wondered what was happening to me, so I dug into research and science behind gazing and discovered its reliability to increase the parasympathetic nervous system. This explained why I felt better and why it was changing my state. I began working with adults and teens and developed a comprehensive method, called GAZE, using three induction techniques that helped people diversify their perception, transform their perspective, and change their state. GAZE translated into tangibles, such as making clearer decisions, defining purpose, quieting the mind, and improving well-being, including how they felt about themselves, their relationships with others, and how they showed up at work, home, and with family.
